This is a payroll for education worksheet that works what an instructor costs per course, the way a small provider pays them. Contact hours plus prep hours per contact hour is the paid hours; times the rate is the pay; plus on-costs is the cost per course; times the courses a month is the monthly cost; and cost over contact hours is the cost of a taught hour. Every figure is yours, the rate and the on-costs above all: the worksheet publishes no pay rate and no employment rule. Paid hours: the prep time made explicit
16 contact hours with half an hour of preparation and marking for each is 24 paid hours. Prep is where instructor pay disputes start, because it is agreed in conversation and paid from memory; entered as a ratio it is a term of the engagement and the worksheet returns the paid hours it produces.
Pay and on-costs: what the course actually bears
24 hours at $45 is $1,080 of pay, and 12% of on-costs takes the cost to $1,209.60 per course. Whether the on-costs are employer taxes, insurance or a contractor's uplift is your arrangement and your adviser's; the worksheet takes the share and adds it.
Per month and per contact hour: the figures to plan with

How much prep time should an instructor be paid for?

What on-costs apply to instructor pay?
It depends on whether the instructor is employed or contracted and where: employer taxes, insurance and benefits for an employee, an uplift or nothing for a contractor. The worked example uses 12% to show the arithmetic; the classification is your adviser's call and the worksheet publishes no rule.
